“Our Hearts Are Restless…”
The Life and Teaching of St. Augustine
November 7—9, 2008
This retreat will be centered in two texts: The Confessions and Augustine, A New Biography. We will explore critically and faithfully the life and teachings of one of the most important thinkers in Christian and Catholic tradition. The Confessions is Augustine’s autobiography, and it anticipates many modern concerns (such as Individuation, conscience, the nature of time, and the cause of evil. The biography of Augustine by James O’Donnell has been critically acclaimed. O’Donnell places Augustine within his historical context, and evaluates his theology from our place at the beginning of the 21st Century.
Pope Benedict XVI is grounded in the theology of Augustine. This retreat will explore the past, the present and the future of the Church-in-the-world. St. Augustine has much to teach us; and we have something to say to him.
