MARY, CALLED THE MAGDALENE
JESUS, CALLED THE CHRIST
June 1-3, 2012
Facilitator:
Deacon Charles “Red” Cheever
A Woman and a Man; the Beloved Disciple and the Christ; history and legend;
faith and spirit; wisdom and truth. These binaries open up to mystery. This retreat
will focus on the Magdalene and her relation to the Christ by looking at the New
Testament, Cynthia Bourgeault’s book and selected non-canonical gospels (in that
order). Rev. Bourgeault divides her book into three parts: Mary Magdalene as
Apostle; Mary Magdalene as Beloved; and Mary Magdalene as Unitive Wisdom.
To study Mary Magdalene is to study discipleship; what does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus the Christ? To be a disciple is to become an apostle: one sent to announce the Good News and to co-create the Kingdom of God (with God!). Discipleship is transformation; transformation is Metanoia. This retreat will explore - - in theory and in practice - - transformation in Christ.
